About our school

Voluntary service

The school runs a flourishing Community Service programme.  Many students in the Sixth Form take part on a weekly basis in a programme of voluntary work in the community.  They help at local primary schools, nurseries, special schools and at the Age Concern and Mencap day centres.  The school also works in co-operation with the local V.S.U. organising voluntary placements and after-school clubs in local primary schools and retirement homes.  Each Autumn, a Harvest Festival tea party, organised by the Lower Sixth, is held for the local elderly residents.

We have a commitment to the Stepney Children's Fund in Tower Hamlets and regularly send Sixth Form volunteers to help at the Outreach Day Centre at Gilwell Park.

Fund-raising for local, national and international charities has offered many students scope to use their initiative in imaginative ways.  This is particularly evident in their response to Children in Need and Comic Relief fund raising days.  In May a fancy dress Fun Run is held to raise money for Charities with which the school has special links and to help fund the Community Service programme.  Throughout each year the money raised for charities reaches well over five thousand pounds.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme offers the students the opportunity to gain both the Bronze and Silver Awards, with the Gold Award planned for the future.  This scheme not only involves an expedition but also enables the students to do some voluntary service and follow a hobby.  This has extended the voluntary service activities to Years 9, 10 and 11.
