Latest news from the LRC

Success! The students can now access their personal LRC accounts in school, from a home computer or through the iMLS App from smartphones, tablets or iPod touch. There is a link to Eclipse via the L.R.C. page on the school website and the students will be receiving more information including user name and log in. We recommend that during their first visit each student changes to a password of their choice.

Students can click on the heart icon to personalise their screen. Clicking on the light bulb brings up a guide to get users the most from the system. As well as the L.R.C. resources the catalogue contains links to over 10,000 curriculum related websites provided by Carel Press who also publish the very useful “Essential Articles” and “Fact Files”. These can be found at www.completeissues.co.uk using the log in mgsg and password mgsg.

As coursework continues we should remind students that Infotrac, which has a link on the student webpage, gives access to a range of resources and is available both in school and at home. The password for this site is info. We recommend ticking the full text box to avoid disappointment.

World Book Day is on March 7th and there will be a variety of activities on and around that date. These include the Kids Lit Quizzes in which tutor groups from Years 7, 8, and 9 attempt to reach the final where the three years compete to be overall winner. Y8 will be in costume as a favourite book character on World Book Day.

Cliff McNish Visit

On April 26th Cliff McNish author of “Angel”, “Breathe”, Savannah Grey” and the “Doomspell Trilogy”, among other novels, spent the day in school. His talk to Year 9 was about his own career and how to get a book published and held his audience of students and staff enthralled. Later there were two workshops on the theme of the four basic stories to be found in all novels. The selected groups of Year 10 students became deeply involved in the debates. At lunchtime there was an opportunity for all students to visit the LRC for a book signing and chat session. Cliff McNish was very easy to talk with.

World Book Day Celebrations 2012

The Kids Lit Quiz was hotly contested this year. The winners were “The Tweenies” of 8SBS who are now on a hat trick having won the previous year as 7LMK. There were numerous excellent costumes worn by Y8 and it was initiative and attention to detail that won prizes for “The Hungry Caterpillar”, “Toy Story” and “The Mad Hatter”. Special thanks go to the team of Year 13 students who ran the whole series of events very efficiently.
